Cocoa Demand Rewired: Global Grindings & Origin Rise

Abstract

Examines the demand side of the cocoa economy through bean grindings, used as a proxy for consumption. Using data from the European Cocoa Association, the Cocoa Association of Asia, ICCO and national statistics, it tracks regional and national grindings over the past decade. It finds that Europe's share is falling, processing in producing countries has grown to about 40% of global grindings, and demand has softened since 2022 as prices spiked.
