Fintech and Digital Payments in Africa: From Mobile Money to Global Scale

Abstract
Traces African fintech from Kenya's M-Pesa in 2007 to today's billion-dollar companies. Using Global Findex, EIB, GSMA, FinDev and industry data, and seventeen charts, the paper covers growth trends, regional differences, gender gaps, venture funding and regulatory sandboxes. It finds that mobile money has done more for financial inclusion than traditional banking, while gender gaps, regional disparities and data and regulatory limits remain.
