Africa's Prosperity Must Be Built by Africans

Abstract

Argues that Africa's prosperity depends on trading more with itself. The paper traces intra-African trade from 1984 to 2024, looks at regional patterns and barriers such as infrastructure, trade costs and overlapping rules, and projects the effect of the AfCFTA under different scenarios in twenty charts. It recommends full AfCFTA implementation, fewer non-tariff barriers, trade infrastructure, support for manufacturing, services and SMEs, and stronger regional institutions.
