Africa's Missing Billions: A Data-Driven Call to End Illicit Financial Flows

Abstract

Examines illicit financial flows: money illegally earned, transferred or used across borders, with a focus on Africa. Using Global Financial Integrity, UNCTAD, Brookings and other public data, it presents twenty charts on the scale, channels and regional patterns of these flows. The analysis suggests trade mis-invoicing is the largest channel and extractive commodities account for most African losses, and it recommends stronger tax and customs enforcement, transparency and regional cooperation.
